Home Oxygen Concentrator Maintenance 101: Essential Tips for Safety, Cleaning & Long-Term Care

Home oxygen concentrators have become a good helper for oxygen therapy in many families. In order to better use the oxygen concentrator, daily cleaning and maintenance are essential.

How to clean the outer shell?

  • Clean the outer shell 1-2 times a month. If dust is inhaled, it will affect the oxygen production effect and even damage the machine
  • Please cut off the power supply before wiping, use a clean and soft wet towel with a little detergent to wipe the outside of the case, and then wipe ot dry with a dry towel
  • Be careful not to let liquid seep into the gaps of the oxygen concentrator body, the moisture on the main body of the machine will affect the molecular sieve inside the oxygen concentrator

How to clean the humidifier bottle of an oxygen concentrator?

  • When using an oxygen concentrator, it is recommended to use purified water in the humidifier bottle and replace it daily
  • The humidifier bottle should be cleaned every 3 days. Clean water or neutral detergent can be used to clean the humidifier bottle to ensure the hygiene of the oxygen
  • If there is scale attached, soak it in 40ml of vinegar, then scrub and rinse it clean
  • In addition, it is recommended to disinfect the humidification bottle once every 7 days. Soak it in 75% medu=ical alcohol or 500mg/L chlorine-containing disinfectant for half an hour, rinse it with clean water, and dry it
  • When the humidifier bottle is not in use, please keep the bottle dry to prevent bacteria from growing

How to clean the nasal oxygen cannula of the machine?

  • We will use nasal oxygen cannula when breathing oxygen. It is recommended that nasal oxygen cannula be used by one person only

How often should the machine’s filter consumables be cleaned?

Although the primary filter of the oxygen concentrator is inconspicuous, it has a great impact on the life od the oxygen concentrator. Because the molecular sieve of the oxygen concentrator is very sensitive to dust, and the filter is the first barrier for air to enter the oxygen concentrator.

  • It is recommended to clean the primary filter every 200hours of operation. You can first rinse it with detergnent and then rinse it with clean water
  • If the secondary filter cloth and filter inside the oxygen concentrator are not cleaned or replaced in time, they will be covered with dust, which will affect the oxygen concentration and even cause the oxygen concentrator to stop producing oxygen. Therefore, the oxygen concentrator needs to clean the filter colth and filter in time every 900 working hours
  • Do not operate the oxygen concentrator without all filter consumables installed or dry

What kind of maintenance should be done before placing an oxygen concentrator that is not in use temporarily?

  • Remove the humidifier bottle, pour out the water in it, wait for it to dry and then put it back in place
  • Cut off the power supply and put away the power cord
  • Store the nasal oxygen cannula at room temperature away from direct sunlight and contamination

What preparations need to be made before reusing the oxygen concentrator?

  • First check whether the power cord is damaged and replace the filter with a new one
  • Clean or replace the nasal oxygen tube with a new one, check whether the nasal oxygen tube is blocked or tangled, and clean and straighten ir in time
  • Cleaning the humidifier bottle

Ignoring the daily maintenance of the oxygen concentrator will nor only affects its normal use, but also pose a safety hazard. Everyone should remember to do a good job of daily maintenance.
